King’s Village, Ghana
The King's Village serves underprivileged communities in Northern Ghana. With the support of organisations including The First Group, the charity adopts an integrated approach to development in deprived communities, providing healthcare, education, water and sanitation, economic and social services designed to alleviate poverty.
The King's Village was established by Ben and Marion Owusu-Sekyere, who moved to Tamale in 1999 and have lived and worked in the region since then.
The couple established a small church in their house in 2000 and began working to help address the high levels of poverty that affected the local community, focusing on improving access to education, healthcare, clean water and sanitation.
Building a thriving community
With the support of donors and sponsors they acquired 43 acres of land adjacent to their house, which today houses a range of facilities including a medical centre providing emergency inpatient care, a full operating theatre and GP services.
A nutritional centre has served thousands of local residents over the years, saving many hundreds of lives, while two schools offer primary and secondary education to children from 14 communities.
Village staff also undertake ongoing community development work, which has helped provide clean water and sanitation to more than 15,000 local residents.
The First Group is a proud sponsor of King’s Village. Over the years it has hosted various events in conjunction with Village staff, including Christmas parties for students attending The King’s School and Tahilah School.
