Dubai named one of the world’s ‘top five global cities’ in major report
Dubai has solidified its position as the region’s – and one of the world’s – leading cities, with the emirate ranking first in MENA and fifth worldwide in the latest edition of the Global City Index published by Brand Finance.
The report, which assesses the merits of 100 major urban centres worldwide, also ranked Dubai first in the world in terms of brand reputation, beating the likes of London, Sydney and New York to the top prize.
Dubai’s reputation was matched by its impressive ranking in the report’s Business & Investment study, with the city perceived as having the second-best ‘strong and stable economy’ and the highest future growth potential.
"Dubai's rise to become the world’s fifth-best city brand is primarily driven by its achievement of ranking first globally for reputation,” commented David Haigh, chairman and CEO of Brand Finance.
“This enhanced perception underscores the effectiveness of the UAE government's strategic investments in infrastructure, tourism, and the business ecosystem. The substantial improvements in Dubai’s consideration metrics further highlight the city’s increasing allure as a premier destination for visitors, residents, businesses, and global investors."
A regional leader with global aspirations
For the second year running, Dubai was named the MEA region’s top city in the report, scoring highly across all performance indicators, but particularly those related to quality of life, economic stability, and opportunities for investment and work. It also ranked highly in categories such as education, tourism, and retirement.
The report highlighted key strategic initiatives that underpinned Dubai’s success, including Dubai Strategic Plan 2030 – the city’s long-term vision for sustainable growth and global competitiveness. The plan emphasises collaboration between government and private sectors and aims to strengthen Dubai’s position as a global hub for trade, finance and tourism.
Dubai’s brand reputation reaches new heights
One of Dubai’s standout achievements in this year’s index is its top ranking for reputation, outscoring leading cities such as Sydney and London. Reputation, as assessed in the report, includes perceptions of safety, governance, and the city’s standing as a place to live and do business.
The report praises Dubai’s ability to build trust and foster a positive global image – crucial factors in attracting international investment and talent.
Haigh noted that Dubai’s reputation has been bolstered by consistent investments in infrastructure, a streamlined business environment, and forward-thinking governance.
Fast-growing business and investment hub
Dubai’s rise to the top of the report’s Business & Investment study is another noteworthy development. The city is now perceived as the most desirable destination for investment globally, outranking traditional financial centres such as New York and London. Several factors contribute to this perception, including a competitive corporate tax environment, ease of doing business, and a strong regulatory framework.
Moreover, Dubai has made significant strides in becoming a hub for innovation and entrepreneurship. Initiatives such as the Dubai Future Foundation and various start-up accelerator programmes continue to drive innovation and entrepreneurship. This has not only enhanced Dubai’s global standing but also positioned it as a city with high growth potential – a factor that resonates strongly with investors looking for long-term returns.
Dubai’s strategic geographical position, bridging East and West, has long been seen as a competitive advantage. This year’s report acknowledged the city’s standing in this respect, ranking it second for economic strength, further underscoring its importance as a global commercial centre.
Connectivity also plays a vital role in Dubai’s global appeal. As the world’s busiest international air hub, Dubai International Airport provides seamless access to key global markets. The city’s focus on enhancing both physical and digital connectivity has been instrumental in attracting businesses and talent from around the world, the report noted.
A leading destination for expat professionals
One of the most significant shifts highlighted in the report is Dubai’s growing appeal as a destination for professionals, both traditional and remote workers. The city rose from 24th to 4th place globally in this category, highlighting the success of new initiatives designed to promote Dubai as a leading destination for professionals seeking flexibility and outstanding quality of life.
Education is another key area where Dubai excels. The city ranks highly for both private and publicly funded schools, making it an attractive destination for families. This focus on human capital development ensures that Dubai remains competitive in attracting and retaining a skilled workforce.
Dubai’s focus on innovation and promoting sustainability are other important factors in the city’s rise in this year’s global index. The city’s focus on sustainability, including investments in green technology and renewable energy, aligns with global trends toward more environmentally conscious urban development. These initiatives not only enhance Dubai’s reputation but will also ensure that it remains a viable and attractive destination in the long term, the report concluded.
